Insurance Training

Good afternoon, I'm wondering about the different ways that other facilities might have educated new staff, particularly those with no prior experience in healthcare, on the many nuances of insurance coverage, as well as how successful those methods may have been. Some of our newer staff have had a difficult time picking this up. Ideas are appreciated...thanks!

Good morning:

During department orientation each new registrar is provided with a booklet that has color examples of insurance cards.  For each example instructions are provided; financial class, entry of the subscriber information, id and group number and if insurance eligibility can be run through our automated system or by website.  Near the end of our probationary period each registrar is given a competency for insurance; identification of insurance, selection of financial class, how to set up insurance line (subscriber info), identification of co-payment, etc.

At our hospital, we have what we call the Access Portal where the access education department works on keeping an updated list of each type of insurance and instructions on how that particular insurance is to be entered.  One specific area allows us to look up blue cross medical insurances by their alpha prefix.  There is a link for every insurance you can imagine and clicking on that link brings up instructions on how to correctly enter it.  We make sure our new people are aware of the portal and how to access it.  Even after 7 years doing this.... I depend on that portal on a daily basis.  In addition to the insurance section, we have a section which is called the "Eclipsys Procedure Manual".  In that section there is likewise a list of links regarding all the different aspects of working on Eclipsys.
